Uganda’s construction sector is growing faster than the economy, but asbestos exposes a deeper problem
Uganda’s construction sector reportedly grew 8.2% in FY2025/26, ahead of overall economic growth of 6.4%, according to the Uganda National Association of Builders, Suppliers and Engineering Contractors. The association has now launched a campaign to replace asbestos roofing on public schools and health facilities, arguing for safer construction materials and stronger local supply chains.

Why it matters: The interesting part isn't just the growth rate. Asbestos replacement potentially creates a large, distributed public-building refurbishment market: roofing, demolition, disposal, replacement materials, structural assessment and associated works.
Takeaway: Uganda's construction opportunity is increasingly shifting from new megaprojects alone toward rehabilitation, replacement and upgrading of existing public infrastructure.
