The project comprises a 264-kilometre Naivasha–Kisumu line, an 8.69-kilometre branch to Kisumu Port, and a 107-kilometre Kisumu–Malaba section. Kenya says the extension will strengthen freight and passenger connections between the Port of Mombasa, western Kenya and regional markets.

The Sh700 billion contract was awarded to Chinese firms China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) and China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC).

The railway's regional value ultimately depends on the completion of Uganda's own Malaba–Kampala SGR connection, but the Kenyan works represent a significant step towards restoring the planned rail link between the Indian Ocean and landlocked East African markets.
