Uganda’s steel bet is getting serious
Roofings Group is adding 150,000 tonnes of annual cold-rolled steel capacity, taking the company’s total capacity to 300,000 tonnes.
Uganda has commissioned Roofings Group’s Shs466 billion Danieli Cold Rolling Mill Complex, adding 150,000 tonnes of annual cold-rolled steel capacity and taking the company’s total capacity to 300,000 tonnes. Uganda’s steel bet is getting serious. The stated ambition is bigger than the plant itself: substitute imported finished steel, increase local value addition and compete for regional markets

Why it matters: This is exactly the kind of infrastructure-adjacent industrial investment that can change the construction market. More local steel processing potentially means shorter supply chains, more predictable availability and a larger domestic ecosystem around fabrication and construction products.
Takeaway: Watch local manufacturing capacity, not just road projects. Uganda's next construction story may increasingly be about what gets manufactured locally to feed those projects.
