Tanga Energy Hub Plans Expand Uganda–Tanzania Petroleum Infrastructure

News Summary: Uganda and Tanzania have entered a new energy partnership involving the Uganda National Oil Company, Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation and Vitol Bahrain to develop the Port of Tanga into an integrated regional energy hub. The proposed infrastructure includes petroleum refining, bulk storage, logistics and distribution facilities, alongside refined-products and natural-gas pipelines linking the two countries. Context

The initiative would extend Tanga's role beyond crude-oil export into downstream processing and regional energy distribution. A proposed bidirectional petroleum-products pipeline would allow refined fuel to move between Uganda and Tanzania according to demand, while the Tanga refinery is intended to complement Uganda's planned 60,000-barrel-per-day Hoima refinery. Feasibility and front-end engineering studies are also planned for supporting pipeline and storage infrastructure.
