Uganda’s First Oil Production Target Off to June 2027

Uganda has pushed back its first commercial oil production target again, with the latest government timeline pointing to June 2027.

Key takeaways

  • The latest target follows the missed July 2026 production deadline.

  • Parliament was told that the 1,443-kilometre East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) is expected to be ready to receive crude by mid-December 2026.

  • The Tilenga and Kingfisher oil projects and associated infrastructure remain central to the production schedule.

  • Uganda's oil-production timelines have been revised several times since commercially viable petroleum deposits were confirmed in the Albertine Graben.

The latest timeline was disclosed during discussions involving the Ministry of Finance, Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU), Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC), National Planning Authority and Uganda Revenue Authority.

Earlier in 2026, PAU had told Parliament that first oil was expected by the end of July.

The latest revision means that while major components of the oil infrastructure programme continue to advance, commercial production will come later than the previously stated target.

Why it matters: The revised timeline affects the sequencing of Uganda's oil infrastructure, including the EACOP, upstream development and associated logistics. It also shifts the expected timing of revenues and downstream economic activity linked to first oil.
